Over the past year there has been a noticeable increase in partner movements, especially within the larger firms. Interestingly, the growing demand from law firms has only added to the dynamics of this situation. Recruiting tax professionals in the UK throughout 2023 has proven to be a formidable challenge. The tax market has continued to face a severe shortage of qualified candidates, which has persisted over the past year and shows little sign of easing. This scarcity of talent has been particularly pronounced in the Corporate Tax
sector, where the demand for tax professionals to transition into industry roles has remained consistently high.
Conversely, the Personal Tax market has exhibited more mixed dynamics, with pockets of strong activity in areas related to trusts, but a market-wide demand that has fluctuated, especially during the latter half of 2022.

In addition to these challenges, there has been a growing need for Indirect Tax experts due to the global expansion of indirect tax regulations, further intensifying the competition for talent in
this niche. The field of tax transformation has also witnessed significant growth, adding to the demand for tax professionals with specialised expertise.

Overall, the difficulty in recruiting tax professionals in the UK in 2023 can be attributed to a combination of factors, including: High demand, skills gaps, and evolving market dynamics. As a result, firms and organizations have had to employ innovative strategies to attract and retain the limited pool of available tax talent.
